It has an okay start with Tom Cruise playing a working class guy, but as the action starts it falls of a cliff and comfortably loses to even "10 Cloverfield Lane" (or any movie at all). It capitalizes on zombie apocalypse/world disaster wave of movies kickstarted by 28 Days Later, there were many comfy movies like that then - the world is ending after all.
Do read the book unironically, H. G. Wells is a magnitudes more serious figure than American sci-fiction writers. I mean, look up his biography.
When he traveled to the US in 1905 and met Teddy Roosevelt in the White House, for reason unknown he then went to a brothel. And told this White House/brothel story to amused English gentlemen from high society. That alone places him apart from American incels composing space operas and solving world problems. While neither meeting foreign presidents nor going to a brothel afterwards.
