Lately, I've only been watching anime from the late 1990s and early 2000s without realizing it until now. I've seen a fair amount of shonen, isekai, power fantasy, harem, ecchi, and am largely familiar with the overused tropes thrown about in the sphere, so I'm satisfied with not periodically binge-watching 10+ seasonal anime at a time, knowing it's slop for the most part. Currently, I'm watching FLCL, Konosuba, and Mushoku Tensei, and plan to watch Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, Be-Bop High School, and Daily Lives of High School Boys. I've also recently seen all of Satoshi Kon's films thanks to @neetastrea's thread. Can anyone recommend me anything else to add to my watchlist? Much appreciated.

You already know what I'm gonna recommend c:
I was traumatized after watching 200 episodes of Naruto, only to find out I wasn't even halfway finished with the series. I realized I had painstakingly gone through 60% filler episodes and vowed to never touch another anime with a similar episode count again. This included DBZ, One Piece, and Bleach. Is there any filler in DBZ, and if so, is it worth watching?

It is worth it 100%
DBZ has 291 episodes but there's DBZ kai which is basically a remastered version of it + no filler with 167 episodes

satoshi kon fanboy here again, if you watched his movies and enjoyed them i would also recommend a show he directed for, paranoia agent.
I also mostly watch 90s and 2000s anime, i think a lot of recent anime shonen and isekai are escapist fanservice and i’m not a huge fan of them.
FLCL is fantastic and so is cowboy bebop. i would recommend both.
if you’ve seen and liked evangelion, try serial experiments lain. if you haven’t seen evangelion, watch that.
if you can tolerate a show being very slow at the start, try ergo proxy.
revolutionary girl utena
is considered a sister series to evangelion and it’s fantastic if you’re ok watching a pretty typical magical show before they delve into the philosophical shit.
all of the aforementioned are 90s and 2000s, but in terms of some modern shit that isn’t just brainless slop and actually has interesting themes, i would recommend:
Puella magi madoka magica:
an all time favorite of mine, i would consider it a 10/10 piece of media. it’s relatively short at 12 episodes and fairly similar to shows like evangelion and utena. it’s a subversion of the magical girl genre and it’s known for being pretty dark. watch until the end of the third episode before dropping it.
Aku No Hana: this anime faced widespread criticism for it’s retroscoped animation but i honestly find it stands out among the overly cutesy vibe of other anime from the time plus fits the unsettling tone of the show. the media I can best compare this to is oyasumi punpun, which is also fantastic but is manga.
if you have a lot of time on your hands and want something longer, since most of what i have recommended is 13 episodes series i would recommend Monogatari. it’s got an extensive length and you’ll probably have to find a viewing guide, but if you can tolerate fanservice it’s one of the best psychological anime out there.

Japanese anime has lost a certain je ne sais quoi. I stopped watching a long time ago. I guess the american influence. I want to watch japanse anime made for the japanese. Not what the japanese thinks will sell in america.
But there are coming some strong stuff out of Korea.
I just discovered that their manga or manhwa has a fresh vibe of authenticity.

Imagine watching naruto in 2024 and not skipping the fillers. This isn't 2007 and you aren't 14 anymore

Whatever retard. Vinland doesnt have a thing on re zero. Ur beloved protagonist is in every way inferior to subaru.

Subaru is a weird ass otaku weeb manlet simp

At least Vinland Saga is based on a true story, many of the characters are actual historical figures like Throfin and lief Ericsson

I like the grounded and mature anime from the 90s like Ghost in the Shell,Jin Roh and Cowboy Bebop. I like the ha d drawn aesthetic as well.

I can't stand most modern anime.

Fuark bro. Mirin so hard I liked all of these too. Only ones I haven't watched is Spy x Family (just not my thing), The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., and Trigun

I also enjoyed Dororo (2019 ver) a lot too, I'd put that on my top 10 along with these and something like Fullmetal Alchemist, Gintama, Hellsing Ultimate (+ regular Hellsing), and maybe Spice and Wolf (og ver, romance is not my thing, but I enjoyed the story either way, was rlly good imo)
