Booted it up got ko'ed by some porcupine beasts and couldn't follow the robot

I liked it the first time and got past the halfway point. But then I lost my best gun was never able to find it again. And the game got harder. So I gave up. Tried getting back into it a few year later and found it boring. This is the case for a lot of games from that era. Even on my first playthrough, I found the bosses unfair, until I found a blindspot I could just fire from.
