Two old friends of mine who I've known since childhood still live on my block, and its been about 5 years since I last even spoke to them or acknowledged their presence. We used to hang around quite a bit until the pandemic struck when I slowly isolated myself and cut off contact overtime, it came to the point where we totally ghosted and forgot about each others existence.
The few times we happened to see each other since was like akin to meeting that one creepy and drunken step-uncle at a family reunion, so you can only imagine. They are most definitely aware of the pitiful rotting state I am in, but don't have the guts to approach me about it despite living right next to me because it would be a very awkward interaction. Imagine trying to talk to that one hobo or drug addict that hangs around your block, it would be like that.
How do you deal with crossing paths with old friends or acquaintances from your childhood? I personally stopped caring about them and shoved it aside, but its still surreal to think about how we live like two blocks away from one another yet act so distant but aware at the same time. Its one of those things you feel in the air.
