The erudite is, in essence, a contemplator of knowledge; a mere observer of nature and things. Knowledge was already highly valued in the Middle Ages, when knowledge for knowledge's sake and daydreaming about abstractions was a sign of wealth, a sign of the nobility who could devote themselves to their studies and their romances. Before that, it served to erect the pillars of knowledge that we know so well. But nowadays, it's almost a complete waste of time to strive for the qualification of scholar. What else is there to learn? What can we learn from Aristotle and Plato that we don't already know in one way or another? What can we learn about the philosophical relationship between form and shape? What more is there to learn? I don't want to say that we've learnt everything, but what is there to learn? Don't we already know what's right and wrong? Don't we already know how things are organised and relate to each other?
Haven't we thought enough about thinking? Far be it from me to throw all our history in the bin or to despise it, but should abstraction be our greatest concern today? Today the quest for erudition is stupidity. Many people say that the path to knowledge runs exclusively along a temporal and geographical line, following the path of the great intellectuals of humanity, but this is very far from the truth. This way of studying isn't practical, it doesn't achieve the best of objectives, it's harmful, it's confusing, it's stupid. If you were to ask me how to study, I would ask you: what is most valuable to you on this earth? That's because all study must be directed towards action. All knowledge should provide us with ways and means for the immediate formation and realisation of character, intentions and will. The true scholar is the man who puts his heart into his actions and masters the knowledge necessary to achieve his noblest goals.
The true master of knowledge is the one who knows himself to the point of throwing himself into the darkness with unconcern. This is the knowledge that we don't have today but that we should be seeking. If I had my way, I'd rip all those rubbish intellectual books out of everyone's hands and replace them with action manuals. In the end, there is only one truth: you know it, you understand it and you ACT. I wish I could say that we should all spend twenty years studying the classics, ruminating on every concept about the shape of things, refining ideas and devising hypotheses, but we can't. Time is running out for us to give in. Time is running out for us to take our own steps, otherwise these pillars of knowledge will remain only in our minds, because in reality they are on the verge of collapse. We are on the verge of collapse, let's get out of the books, let's stop discussing reality, so that we can secure it and actually recover it.
Before I forget, to finish off, the phrase ‘healthy mind, healthy body’ is wrong, action always comes first: healthy body, healthy mind. That goes for everything.
