The basis of forming a tulpa is that you convince yourself that it is a real, separate entity in your head. Otherwise, it's just a basic imaginary friend. Achieving the former requires delusion, self-induced schizophrenia, or unwittingly inviting demons into your head.
This worst possible scenario can be corrected by letting them out with a trepanation procedure, having a professional drill a hole in the skull. Unfortunately, all of the old /r9k/ tulpamancers who got possessed never pursued this treatment.
