Read whatever you find interesting and don't worry abiut the prestige of what's "real lit"

Liggers will tell you Tom Jones is real lit despite being 90% fart jokes. Tristam Shandy is real lit despite being shizo rants

Honestly if you like shonen stormlight archive, wheel of time, the poppy wars are basically shonen/jrpg games. But they aren't real lit because it's genre fantasy

Wot is as deep as any philosophy book imo

Don't fall for the meme of "books = smart" lol just look for books on topics you're already interested in. Don't enter literature with the intent of becoming smart that's unrealistic. I like history so most of what I read is like 8 page documents lol. Here Thread 'Books Megathread' https://neets.net/threads/books-megathread.28868/

Also if you're into fantasy look up Nnedi Okorafor

There's also Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter. It's high fantasy with some African mythology influences. Didn't finish it but it does look interesting. Afrofantasy is my favourite subgenre. Examples:
Rosewater by Tade Thompson
Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi (don't read the sequel though)
My life in the bush of Ghosts by Amos Tutuola

Another point is that I almost overlooked okarafor because people said its YA therefore shes bad lol. It's not YA but even if it were, who cares?

People here may tout me as some sort of psuedo intellectual for mentioning books at all but I'm actually the world's biggest anti intellectual and against litcucks

Litcucks say YA is the worst label in the world but like... why? What separates bildungsroman from YA? The answer is they're obsessed with prestige and looking smart

Red rising is a very anime like sci fi series that people debate over. And defenders say it's not YA, but really who cares? It's a good series either way

Subconscious bias. I also overlooked almost every book I mentioned because it's YA lmao. It's just that a lot of YA books are written by people who clearly spend too long on twitter, so those horrible books somewhat poison the well and make the rest look bad. Tomi Adeyemi is very much a YA writer who fits every negative connotation I have, but I just ignore her beliefs because her books are pretty well written. It's hard to get rid of that bias sometimes

Litcucks are some of the most smug people ever ngl. I only mention my interest in books passively and stay away from shit like book clubs because those spaces are always a dick measuring contest. What genres you read determine your class. The length of the books determine your wisdom, even if the book is from Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (literally 3000 pages of Yaoi). In history spaces it becomes more about quantity. Oh you read 2 books on King Kaleb and think you're qualified to talk about Axum? Well I read 15 books on general aksumite history and know everything about their conquest of Yemen, so suck it. (Even though those 15 books all regurgitated the same information with different wording lol)

Have you tried audiobooks? I’ve heard they are good for listening to while doing other things.

Try light novels first, like welcome to the NHK :feelsthumb: try reading whatever you enjoy, it's that simple. Look up interesting books and start reading, don't try and read things you aren't interested in just to look 'intellectual' or something, it'll be boring and nobody will care. Once you find a good book and are finished reading, try finding books similar to it and keep going from there. Like after I read NHK, I read a similar-ish book called Bel Ami about a French NEET.
