So lately I've been trying to decide which religion would be nice to follow. I am honestly kind of tired of the degenerate hedonistic life, I want to follow strict morals and live with some sense of higher purpose, instead of just constant meaninglessness. However is hard to choose one because they all have stuff I don't like. Obviously my number one pick was going to be Christianity, since most of the people in my country are Christians and it's one of the most popular in the world. I also know someone who has been trying to push me into Christianity, they are constantly telling me about God's infinite glory and about how I would never feel alone again if I have God. They even got me a mini bible as a gift, it only contains the New Testament though. But honestly, I just don't like it. I especially don't like the way Christians tend to behave, thinking that their morals are superior and everyone else should be subjugated to them, but even ignoring the, often times antithetical to Christ, behavior displayed by so called "Christians", the bible itself is also not very nice, and it's also full of stuff where you're really gonna have to suspend your disbelief in order to preserve your faith.
This takes me then to me current situation, since all religions are going to have stuff I don't like, why not make my own? I certainly like many things about Christianity, I like some of its ideas when it comes to sex and abstinence, but I don't like any of the crazy stories from the Old Testament or many of its commandments.
And to be fair, calling it a religion might be a bit of a stretch, since I don't plan to start suddenly believing in some higher being or preaching its existence, my religion would be more centered around how a person ought to act. I want to make a detailed list of things that a person should do and not do, according to my own criterion and according to what I consider an ideal person would do, essentially I want to create my own ideal of what an Übermensch is, and then religiously follow this guide to try and become more like an Übermensch every day.
Some of the "commandments" I am thinking of adding (some of them are not really commandments but rather suggestions on how to live) are stuff like "A man should always strive to increase his a priori knowledge". I don't really like the term "a priori knowledge" but that's what people call it. I 'd rather call it "necessary knowledge" aka knowledge that transcends this reality and would always be true in any parallel world. As you can probably tell from this, I want my religion to be centered around increasing knowledge, especially mathematical, philosophical and in general necessary knowledge. Basically I want to make something similar to what the Pythagoreans had in Greece, with less mysticism and also promoting some conservative values around stuff like sex, but also promoting helping and caring about your brethren (aka all humans, not just people of your same skin color).
So what do you guys think? Do you have any suggestions?
