Misleading thread title, you weren't fired for "standing up" to this guy, but indeed for going overboard.
"Standing up" would simply be failing to comply with his demands to give the woman priority treatment. You could have just done that: stood your ground.
Your manager was correct: it was unprofessional behavior to do things like cuss a guy's mother when he's threatening you, or plot future battles with him.
