srs. i became lazier, more anhedonic to social outcomes, and began to glorify rotting, eating slop, sleeping in and avoiding strenous activity forever after reading all the strips and internalizing the message start to ~2010
the message is obvious. Garfield is the NEET and Jon is the wagie. Despite stentorian efforts Jon never has anything approximating success. Until they added the character of Liz he was incel, getting brutal rejected by every female shaped object in existence. He works a shit job, is terminally depressed and has no discernable friends or family. This is played off as being because Jon is dorky (always being well groomed for no one, wearing a dress collar) and highly neurotic/OCD (coding for non-NT)
best illustrated by "garfield minus garfield"
Even in his own house he has no peace or solace, every time he buys some sort of hobby item he enjoys like a fern garfield rips it to shreds, every time he makes dinner garfield steals it - in fact I don't think he's ever had any sort of happiness or satisfaction in his life that wasn't resolved through a sadistic punchline by panel #3. He tolerates the parasite because he has nobody else, nothing to live for - every time he tries to change it he returns, defeated and with irreperable psychic damage represented by a black cloud that enscones him. The outside world is a hostile place, even Garfield is not immune to this, getting assaulted by feral cats and guard dogs (coded for who? lol) whenever he goes on his increasingly sparing walks
in short the game is rigged. You CANNOT win. The only thing left is to be a parasite who alternates between sleeping, stuffing their face with slop and watching TV all day.
