I was a mod at one point on a mental health forum.
To be honest I don't even understand why people power trip so much when given this position. It was actually a pretty boring task and got annoying after a while.
People are extremely petty. They'd constantly PM me asking me to ban X or Y user because they didn't like them, and say I'm a shitty mod for not doing so. Then if I do ban a popular user for a serious offense (like posting gore non stop or making legitimate ER threats), the community will completely turn against you and shit all over you.
