Deformed is worse because for every bit of genuine sympathy you get there's countless people quietly judging you. I would also assume that a disabled person would get sick of getting constant sympathy rather than being treated as an individual eventually. People will feel bad for you sure, but no one would genuinely care about you beyond "oh poor guy" so you'll always be excluded. Conventionally ugly is brutal because you get the same without the empathy, but can also be better because you at least have a chance to do something about it. Makeup, fashion, whatever. A deformed person is just fucked. There's also the rare case of someone willing to look past your appearance and love you for your character, but that's a fantasy for most of us
