Is the "addict" gene real?

Eminem mentions it in a song, and I have read that alcoholism in your family might lead you to become an alcoholic, but I don't know if it was environmental or genetic factor.

My parents were alcoholic, frenetic smokers, binge eater...

I had issues controlling my gaming, then my drinking, then my eating, then my fapping... but those are not addictions.

Is it a lack of self control, an escapism or is there some truth to the "addict" gene?

If you get your science education from Eminem, you need to rethink things.

It's all dopamine addictions. Modern society is bombarded with it, and they get addicted. Simple as that.

I believe it’s real. Some people are more able than others to exercise self-control. I’m definitely easily addicted to everything remotely pleasurable.

Your CNS development is polygenic. That is, it is based on the result of numerous genes interacting together. Thus, there is no single "Addict" gene.

MAOA:

MAOA Enzyme Basics

Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) is an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. In line with this, scientists have proposed that [3].

  • High levels of this enzyme should translate to fewer neurotransmitters – as MAO breaks them down quicker.
  • Low levels of this enzyme should imply more neurotransmitters – as there’s less MAO around to degrade them

Theoretically, MAO-A is not something we want to be too high or too low. Both situations have been associated with different negative effects [4].

According to one hypothesis, relatively high or low levels could have been advantageous in different environments in our evolutionary history. This might be precisely because “warrior” variations are relatively common in the population, so they likely served some purpose in our evolutionary past [5].

I have the rs6323(T;T), three-repeat, lower version:

MAOA Gene

Autism severity is associated with child and maternal MAOA genotypes

We demonstrated that (i) boys with the low activity 3-repeat MAOA allele had more severe sensory behaviors, arousal regulation problems, and aggression, and worse social communication skills than males with the high activity allele; and (ii) problems with aggression, as well as with fears and rituals, were modified by the mothers' genotype. Boys with the 4-repeat high activity allele who had homozygous 4-repeat mothers showed increased severity of these behaviors relative to those born to heterozygous mothers. These findings indicate the importance of considering maternal genotype in examining associations of MAOA and other genes with behavior in male offspring.

addict gene sounds like pseudoscience they teach at alcoholics anonymous and shit. some people have a higher tendency to do retarded shit (that's genetic) so they inevitably gamble too much or abuse drugs.

addiction is an excuse for the weak to continue with their degenerate lifestyle.

People like that (autists) have no place in this world now.
