Anime itself is overrated. People in Japan pretty much don’t give a shit about it, to them it’s just another form of entertainment

I can recommend Monster it's quite dark.
I remember Samurai Shampoo, GTO, Noir as a teen, not sure how they fare in your twenties.

Kaiji is an excellent series about a neet loser who's in huge debt and he has to gamble to save his own life.

I completed it about 4-5 years ago and now I'm watching it again. It's so good tbh.
