They keep repeating this shit in those train safety ads that regularly pop up, but guess what? I’ve beaten a train before and I’m still here. The gates had just come down but I knew right then there was plenty of distance between me and the train, so I barreled on through and came out the other side just fine.

I’ve heard of survivor’s guilt before, but I don’t think I’ve heard of that one.

Basically when you only look at the winners and overlook all the losers
"My grandpa smokes 2 packs a day since he was 15 and he's still alive with no lung cancer! Smoking danger is overblown"

Same thing with this, you only look at that one time you 'beat' the train and ignore the thousands of train deaths and say that there is no danger to crossing trains

I never said there wasn’t danger, but my point was that they’re not unbeatable as they’re said to be. It depends on how long the gates have been down, the distance of the train, and how fast it’s going.

Really it all comes down to risk assessment and luck. If you decide to say fuck it and go for it you’ll either come through unscathed and get where you need to be faster, or you get hit and killed or arrested and/or fined if a cop is nearby. Just like in your smoking example, you can choose to smoke and get cancer, or be one of the lucky ones who doesn’t. Likewise you can choose to not smoke and wait out the train, but risks come in different shapes and forms and I think everybody takes them in life, even if some do it more than others.

why would you do that though

Survived = at risk of being arrested for violating an active railroad crossing and saved maybe 1 or 2 minutes
Failed = death

Like cmon they even made a song about how dumb it is

If I survived it could save half an hour depending on how long the train is and rate in which it’s moving, and the only way I’d get caught would be if police happen to be on the side I’m coming out on.
If I failed at least it would be a quick death, so not the worst way to go tbh.

Dumb Ways To Die is a fun game btw.
