New Horizons elevated the player to godhood status, which goes completely against what the early Animal Crossing titles played into.
The OG, Wild World, and City Folk had the player immerse themselves in a world that isn't their own, getting to live among the locals. Starting with New Leaf (and further exacerbated in New Horizons), it turned the series into a village/city simulator while babyfying every villager into being massive asskissers for the player. Normally I wouldn't hate New Horizons for doing this; I would have simply shrugged it off and said it wasn't for me, expecting something new in the next game some years down the line. But given the lifetime sales of New Horizons eclipsed all previous games' sales combined, it's safe to say that the Animal Crossing series I once loved is now gone forever, and New Horizons killed it by coming out at the perfect time (during pandemic lockdowns).
So that's why I hate New Horizons. All I can do now is wait and pray that the next installment isn't utter dogshit like New Horizons was, but it seems extremely unlikely. Perhaps a remaster of GameCube will come out by or just after 2030 (the GameCube's internal clock ends in 2030). I have little hope for the future of the series, however.
I guess this is just a vent about a series I grew up with and my all-time favourite game franchise. Even New Leaf was excellent. The drop-off in quality from New Leaf going to New Horizons is almost comically bad.
Also crafting fucking sucks.
