They change layouts and make unnecessary changes because they have a larger staff than needed and want to make the dead weight feel useful by giving them useless tasks. Get the chrome extension that lets you customise the layout and pick an ideal one, they'll keep doing this forever. Alternatively stop using YouTube and get a frontend. I use NewPipe

They implemented it for gen alpha kids that grew up watching 5 screens at once and can't focus on the video without simultaneously reading the comments.
