I just finished playing Arx Fatalis for the first time, the first half of the game was amazing and unique, the atmosphere is top notch, the detail and the worldbuilding are immersive - then the game suddenly degraded into another dungeon crawler puzzle solving game where you search super duper artifact #12 in order to stop big baddie #374 with generic high fantasy plot. Seriously the puzzle element just ruined the game for me, and for the same reason I can't never get into classic arena FPS despite I really like the basic gun play. I tried classic Doom 1&2, managed to beat them once and never ever touch them again because I ended up hating the level "design" where you have to run through the map back and forth just to find that exact switch for the exact key to unlock the exact place. I dont have problem with the cocept of having to think in order to progress, but most of time the puzzle elements in games are either of the following :
- item hunt
- retarded ass riddle : instead of telling the player what the rule is and letting them find out the answer, the game expects the player to find out what the fucking rule even is in the first place which doesn't even make sense.
- maze, basically 1 & 2 combined, and also nausea inducing, I fucking hate classic doom.
Not only does puzzle in video games suck, but they also halt the progression and derail the game from it's base mechanism. The only reason I can think of is because the developers want to make the game longer than it actually would be but I'd rather have a shorter game than dealing with elements I don't even want in the first place. I just hate puzzle in games with a passion. Anyone else thinks the same?
