Discussion social media and forums are a shit 1:1 substitution for socializing irl (impossible in 2024)

generations ago (maybe in 1990 no clue no expierence) if you were in the mood to browse a forum you'd go outside to some social venue like church or a bar where you didn't have to take the effort of talking at length as if you were in a small group/1 on 1. Church is instagram, the town square is reddit, the gaming hobby store would be discord, and forums like this would be seedy bars filled with criminal underbelly elements.

From this you'd percolate around social groups and you would be able to hear little bits of news and funny anecdotes in real time like a feed. You could join in if you wanted to or if you were some sort of (public) forum ally and give each other irl upvotes like laughing extra loud. If you didn't you could just lurk and walk a few steps away to go to next thread or get something to drink or a deviled egg.

If you wanted to play a video game with some friends you would do what video games are attempting to emulate, you'd go outside on some sort of IRL adventure that captures everyones attention and puts them in the moment with a shared goal.

instead of dming whenever u thought of random bullshits it would accumilate in your head and when u saw them randomly you'd talk for however long, maybe deep into the night smoking and eating little snacks somewhere beautiful - im seething just typing this i want to be in mountains having a soul-to-soul conversation with friend, staying up from passion, excitement, future. im up now instead from music lingering foul feeling and blue light. remind me of a famous book quote:

Soy men seem to like this kind of socializing where there is no "point" but hanging out, "getting to know each other", a having a "sesh" with the buds

Then you have shared interest bonds. CS Lewis/ tolkien and the "inklings". Hp lovecraft and Robert E Howard. Hamilton and John Laurens etc

But there's a shared niche interest/passion. As opposed to just swinging your arms and keeping up with the jones

I've never been able to "do" normal friendships even the typical psuedo social ones because there's no central hook. I like forums more fir this reason

there are probably genetic factors that contributed to that, but there would have been ideal circumstances in your upbringing that would have resulted in you feeling differently - its the result of abuse that you've been robbed of living a real life instead of wooden puppet one like pinocchio
