The anime is about a girl who begins her first year at Seiran High School. There, unexpectedly, she is admitted into the Sorority, an elitist society composed of the most outstanding students.
That's basically the basic summary, I don't want to delve into the main plot because the enjoyment lies in experiencing the events yourself.
What I will highlight, however, is the depth of the characters and their emotions. It feels like reading an existentialist novel, narrated in the first person, where the main character is more of an excuse for the viewer to witness through her eyes the universe created by the author.
There is quite a lot of drama; several dynamics and backstories between the characters are already "in progress," and like the main protagonist, we are unaware of them and will only discover them as the plot progresses, which keeps it interesting.
The animation is not known for its fluidity (we’re talking about a 90s anime), but this is more than compensated for by the high quality of the artwork. The soundtrack is also incredibly iconic (my favorite track is the ending, where they seem to add influences of Baroque classical music to the typical Japanese pop theme).
The constant cultural references to poems, historical figures, and musical pieces enrich the atmosphere. I should mention there is some softcore lesbianism, in case that might be a deterrent for some.
