Success Why is every game these days an open world game?

Was playing the campaign of Gears 5 and couldn't help but notice that the linear parts of the game were far more enjoyable. Sometimes it's just far better to hav a straight path, having 15 other "secondary" objectives just ruins it for me. Look at Ubisoft pre-2011, most games they released were quite linear. Now they literally only publish big open world games. I'm afraid of the shit that Halo: Infinite may be.

ES6 doesnt even exist, they're LARPing about its existence to generate hype and get more skyrim sales.

I feel like games have really taken a downhill turn. I remember when I was young and I would buy games in the ps2/xbox generation or the ps3/xbox 360 generation. Even if it was some small game that no one had ever heard of it, it was still cool and fun to play. And the big games were good too. Stuff like max payne, halo 1 2 and 3, god of war, jak and daxter, smash bros, and so many others. Now games have super detailed graphics and all kinds of crazy features, but they run at 30fps and the mechanics are ok and the story is bland, not really terrible but there is nothing really good anymore it seems.

It's normal for adults to not like games and sports.

IMHO I think of games and spectator sports as a waste of time. It's a meaningless show that repeats itself every year. The purpose isn't to make us feel good or enlighten us, but to grab our money.

FYI I used to be a huge fan of games and sports.

It’s simple

physics > graphics

action packed scripted linear > open world mostly spaced out usually with elements of repetitive grinding

Skyrim started this fad. Golden goose for the greedy devs

Same with Amnesia. The first-person survival horror where you can't defend yourself.

They all ran these tropes to the ground.

I like open plan games where you can approach a problem uniquely.

Deus Ex HR is my fav atm

Modern games just try to tick as many boxes as possible, or you could say trying to cast their net as wide as possible that way gaining highest playerbase.
These days games are not designed by game designers but by marketing specialists.

I don’t know but microtransactions are a bigger problem in my opinion.
