Because the majority of reddit users are childless millennial normies who live in cities. As such most of their life is built around consumerism. The only thing they have in life is le new product. That's why every gaming subreddit is full of obnoxious toxic positivity. When you criticize that new product you're threatening their meagre will to live.

Politics are another copium they have. By engaging in mindless online political discussion and debate they can make their tiny repetitive meaningless lives feel more significant while also relieving some of their violent and tribalistic urges like a neutered dog who's only allowed to chew on plastic squeak toys.
