Why do they keep them as pets?

Maybe that only applies to the Netherlands (not only Dutch people mog in height, but they're more enclosed), but in more progressive countries it's a whole different picture. I don't hate animals, but I don't see the reason to keep them as pets when the only they do is poop around, barking and bothering people who are sleeping, etc.
