Yet what would happen if someone said, well let's cheat the system and print more money than can be backed up by gold.

When the french said ok give us the gold back then, Nixon had to say there is not enough gold in the reserves, which collapsed the economic system.

That means that anytime someone takes a loan new money is created, and people who take loans buy assets for example houses.
Let's say the price of a house before all of that was 100k now imagine what happens when countless people take loans and want to buy it, the price goes threw the roof.
In such a system people borrow more and more, and assets become more and more expensive, while at the same time interest payments become bigger and bigger.
So now not only are the wages worth much less, but a person wanting to buy a house also has to take additional debt.
It also means that if you already owned shares, houses, land all of that has increased in wealth, while if you earn wages your purchasing power has decreased, it's essentially the largest wealth transfer in human history.
The result is that 50 percent of us population owns 2 percent of the total wealth.
To change this economic system it would be necessary to change its core, and this is something the oligarchy might do, cause at some point people will take so much debts and the interest rates to pay will be so high that it will be unsustainable.
